The Chemical Rubber Company Science Achievement Award

The award is sponsored by the Chemical Rubber Company, and is awarded to an outstanding Freshman Chemistry student. It consists of a certificate and a copy of the latest edition of the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

The award is sponsored by friends and past students of Professor Andrews. He taught CM221 for the majority of his 33 years at Clarkson. He was a teacher dedicated to his profession by remaining current with advancing technology, and also dedicated to the students, many of who became personal friends.

Egon Matijević Endowed Chemistry Scholarship

The award was established in 1988 in honor of Dr. Egon Matijevic', Clarkson’s Distinguished University Professor, for his enormous contribution to the scientific community around the globe and for his exemplary service to the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science, the Center for Advanced Materials Processing, and the entire University. The award recognizes an outstanding undergraduate student majoring in chemistry with a scholarship, which is renewable up to four years during the student’s undergraduate study at Clarkson.

Goodrich Memorial Fund Undergraduate Award is given annually to the graduating senior Chemistry major whose career at Clarkson has been exemplified by the traditions of scientific and humanistic thought and inquiry that made Professor Goodrich an outstanding chemist, scholar, and human being.

Edward D. Sayer Memorial Award

The Edward D. Sayer Memorial Award is awarded to a senior Chemistry or Biomolecular Science student who has demonstrated academic excellence, superior contributions as an undergraduate teaching assistant and will be entering a graduate/professional school following graduation from Clarkson. This award is in honor of Edward Sayer, Chemistry 2004, who, in spite of his struggle with illness, exhibited all of the above qualities.
The Brunauer Award
None
The Brunauer Award was established by the Department of Chemistry in 1973 in honor of Professor Stephen Brunauer, former chairman of the Department and the first director of Clarkson’s Institute of Colloid and Surface Science, and one of the world’s most eminent and most respected chemists. It is awarded on Commencement day to a graduating senior who has written an outstanding senior thesis in chemistry, and it is the highest professional honor that the Department can bestow.
Biomolecular Science Major Martin LaFleur Awarded Prestigious Goldwater Scholarship
Martin LaFleur
Junior Martin W. LaFleur, a biomolecular science major from Potsdam, N.Y., has been awarded a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship. The Goldwater Scholarship is the most prestigious award in the United States given to undergraduates studying the sciences. Only 282 scholarships were awarded for the 2012-2013 academic year. LaFleur performs research throughout the year and is currently working in Clarkson Professor Richard Partch’s lab on the development of a chemotherapeutic-functionalized gold nanoparticle to help avoid the drug resistance that is commonly acquired after treatment with targeted cancer therapies. LaFleur is a presidential scholar and recently joined the Clarkson Honors Program in order to write a formal thesis on his work with Partch. Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Welcomes Two New Faculty
The Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science welcomes two new faculty beginning in the fall 2012 semester. Dr. Paul Goulet and Dr. He Dong will both begin teaching and research activities in the Department in August.
Professor Shipp Appointed Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Chemistry
Professor Devon Shipp
Professor Devon A. Shipp of the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science has been appointed an Associate Editor of the Australian Journal of Chemistry. The journal has a 65 year history and is the premier outlet for original chemical research in Australia, New Zealand and southeast Asia. It also accepts papers from other part of the world, and is published by CSIRO Publishing. As part of this position he will handle submitted and invited research papers, and be the primary coordinator for journal activities in the USA. Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Scientists Implant Biofuel Cell in Living Snail
Researchers led by Evgeny Katz, the Milton Kerker Chaired Professor of Colloid Science in the Department of Chemistry & Biomolecular Science, have implanted a biofuel cell in a living snail. This is the first incidence of an implanted biofuel cell continuously operating in a snail and producing electrical power over a long period of time using the snail’s physiologically produced glucose as a fuel. Clarkson University Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Graduate Students to Present their Research in Jordan
Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Department graduate students Katie Poetz, Jennifer Sidletsky and Kenneth Yancey, and chemistry research technician Edward Howell, mentored respectively by Professors Shipp, Goia, Minko and Partch, have been selected to participate in the April 2012 International Chemistry Student Research Symposium at the University of Jordan, in Amman. They will be presenting their thesis research subjects and interacting with peers from over 20 other countries from all over the world. This interaction is made possible by a Memorandum of Understanding between Clarkson and the University of Jordan signed by the respective university presidents in 2008, and the personal invitation from two recent Clarkson chemistry PhD recipients now on the faculty there.
Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Grad Student Selected for NSF Program in Australia
Clarkson University Chemistry & Biomolecular Science graduate student Shay Mailloux of Malone, N.Y., has been selected by the National Science Foundation to participate in the prestigious 2012 East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes. In June, Mailloux will travel to Canberra, Australia, to be hosted by the Australian Academy of Science for the eight-week research program. Professor Silvana Andreescu Receives $440K in Funding from NIH
Professor Silvana Andreescu
Chemistry & Biomolecular Science Professor Silvana Andreescu received $440,000 worth of funding from the NIH National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Andreescu and her team will develop a novel sensing technology for real-time monitoring of neurotransmitters. The technology will be used to study neurophysiological events in collaboration with neurophysiologists and medical doctors at Dartmouth Medical School. The project is a collaborative effort between Andreescu at Clarkson and James C. Leiter at Dartmouth. February 2011: Earlier this month, Evgeny Katz, the Milton Kerker Chaired Professor of Colloid Science at Clarkson University, was named one of the world’s top-100 chemists over the past 10 years, as ranked by the impact of his published papers by Thomson Reuters. Katz is listed at #62, with 97 papers in that time frame with 6,147 citations and an impact of 63.37. Read More...
May 2011: Professor Silvana Andreescu was awarded tenure and promoted to associate professor at Clarkson. She was also honored with the John W. Graham Research Award at the spring 2011 commencement ceremony.

It is awarded on Commencement day to a graduating senior who has written an outstanding senior thesis in chemistry, and it is the highest professional honor that the Department can bestow.
Rama Yakubu, a junior Biomolecular Science major and member of the Honors Program at Clarkson, has been named a UNCF-Merck Undergraduate Fellow for the 2010-2011 academic year. This prestigious award includes an academic scholarship along with research internships in Merck labs for the 2010 and 2011 summers. Rama has been involved in research his entire time at Clarkson and is currently working with Prof Costel Darie in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science on a projects involving screening for serum biomarkers. In one project Rama is screening for inflammation detection using novel biochemical and proteomics approaches. In another Rama is monitoring two serum proteins as biomarkers for cell differentiation and cell proliferation in sera from patients with various forms of cancer. Portions of his work will be presented at the North East Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Potsdam, New York, this summer, and at the up-coming meeting of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry in Salt Lake City, Utah. Rama will be finishing his B.S. degree at Clarkson in May 2011.
Guinevere M. Strack, a Chemistry Ph.D. student, has been selected to attend the 60th Interdisciplinary Meeting of Nobel Laureates at Lindau, Germany, this summer, 2010. She will be attending the meeting in a group of 77 of the best graduate students selected from universities across the United States. She is working on her degree at Clarkson with Professor Evgeny Katz in the Department of Chemistry and Biomolecular Science on projects related to biomolecular computing and bioelectronics. It has included biochemical mimicking of computing operations/devices using enzyme-based systems and their coupling with "smart" signal-responsive materials.
